Basketball Selection Trials 2026–27: Criteria and Selection Process

Panthers Basketball Trials 2026–27

Basketball Selection Criteria

Panthers Basketball Trials 2026–27 are designed to provide a clear, fair and measurable selection process. Students will be assessed through age-appropriate basketball tasks that focus on dribbling, speed, passing, shooting, lay-up efficiency, court movement, defensive awareness and decision-making.

Overview

The Panthers Basketball selection process is built around measurable basketball actions, not general opinion. Students complete structured tests, and their scores are recorded using timings, successful attempts, target accuracy, skill execution and game-based decision-making.

πŸ€ Ball Control & Speed Students are assessed on straight-line dribbling, cone-weave control, advanced dribble skills and agility.
🎯 Passing & Shooting Students complete wall passing, goal shooting, lay-up and timed shooting tasks with measurable outcomes.
🧠 Court Awareness Older students are assessed on passing, movement, defence, judgement, offensive decisions and finishing ability.
Important: Selection is based on recorded evidence from the trial. The expected level becomes more advanced as students move from U9 to U11 and then into U14, U17 and U19.

Important β€” Must Read

  • Each student will complete the required basketball trial stations for their age group.
  • U9 and U11 use a fixed score structure out of 40 points.
  • U14, U17 and U19 use a combination of skill scores, lay-up score, timed ranking, shooting score and court movement/defence rubric.
  • A high score supports selection but does not automatically guarantee a place.
  • Final selection may also consider team balance, playing roles, attitude, coachability, defensive contribution and suitability for the Panthers Basketball team.

Simple Scoring System

The basketball trial uses measurable evidence such as time, number of accurate passes, successful baskets, lay-up conversion, correct dribble execution and defensive/offensive decisions.

Age GroupMain Trial AreasScoring StructureTotal / Ranking Method
U915m speed dribble, wall pass, cone weave, basket shooting. Each station is scored out of 10./40
U1115m speed dribble, wall pass, cone weave + lay-up, basket shooting. Each station is scored out of 10. Lay-up bonus is applied within the station score cap./40
U14Dribble & lay-up efficiency, shooting, court movement and defence.Uses skill score, lay-up points, timed ranking, age/gender shooting score and court movement rubric.Ranking-based
U17 & U19Dribble & lay-up efficiency, shooting, court movement and defence.Uses skill score, lay-up points, timed ranking, age/gender shooting score and court movement rubric.Ranking-based

Final Selection Guidance

Selection PointExplanation
Evidence-Based AssessmentScores are based on measurable trial outcomes such as timing, successful passes, successful baskets, lay-ups, dribble execution and rubric-based court movement.
Age-Appropriate ExpectationsU9 and U11 focus on foundational skills, while U14, U17 and U19 include more advanced dribbling, timed shooting, offensive choices and defensive awareness.
Ranking-Based SelectionFor older categories, time ranking and performance across all stations will support final selection decisions.
Team BalanceFinal selection may also consider squad size, role requirements, defensive contribution, attitude, coachability and suitability for the Panthers Basketball team.

U14/U17/U19 Dribble and Lay-Up Efficiency Test

ComponentHow It WorksScoring
Dribble Sequence Student starts at the cone, weave dribbles through the cones, completes a left-hand lay-up, collects the rebound, performs a crossover dribble, behind-the-back dribble, between-the-legs dribble, and finishes with a right-hand lay-up. Demonstrates all 3 advanced dribbles = 3
Demonstrates 2 = 2
Demonstrates 1 = 1
Demonstrates none = 0
Lay-Up ConversionStudent completes left-hand and right-hand lay-up attempts within the drill.Each counted basket = 2 points.
Completion TimeThe timer starts on the whistle and ends when the student crosses the finish line. The fastest student in the age category receives the highest score based on the number of participants. For example, if 25 students participate, the fastest receives 25 points, second fastest receives 24, and so on.

U14 Shooting Test

Students get 20 seconds to take shots. Out of five place markers, they cannot shoot twice from the same spot.

Under 17 & Under 19 Basketball Trial Criteria

At U17 and U19 level, students are expected to demonstrate stronger basketball performance, including advanced ball handling, efficient finishing, shooting under time pressure, tactical judgement and defensive responsibility.

Criteria5 β€” Exemplary4 β€” Proficient3 β€” Developing2 β€” Limited1 β€” Beginning
Ball Control & AgilitySmooth dribbling and passing, head up, confident speed/direction changes, balanced under pressure.Good control with effective direction and pace changes.Basic control but sometimes shaky, slow or inconsistent.Frequent loss of control and difficulty moving with balance.Very little control and unable to complete tasks consistently.
Court MovementMoves efficiently, uses space well and is always ready for the next play.Moves well and stays in useful court positions. Some purposeful movement but positioning is inconsistent.Limited purposeful movement and often out of position.Major difficulty staying with the play.
Passing & OffenseStrong accurate passes, smart offensive decisions and confident finishing.Accurate passes and good offensive choices most of the time. Some accurate passes and basic offensive choices but inconsistent finishing.Inaccurate or poorly timed passes; poor offensive choices.Rarely completes passes or shows effective offensive play.
Defensive Awareness & JudgmentReads play quickly, reacts at the right time and pressures offense effectively.Usually reads play and makes good defensive decisions. Some awareness, but reactions and decisions are delayed or inconsistent.Late reactions or poor defensive choices create space for offense.Little awareness and ineffective defensive response.
